The mission of the Y is "To Put Christian Principles into Practice through Programs that Build a Healthy Spirit, Mind, and Body for All."
We at the Y strive to make a difference in our community through our Six Signature Outreach Programs. Thanks to the generous support of Y Donors we are able to meet the needs of our community through these six special programs.
OUR COMMUNITY OUTREACH
In an effort to help feed the hungry children in our community, the Y has partnered with local churches to provide backpacks filled with healthy foods to needy children in our schools. Currently, the Y provides 50 backpacks filled with nutritious food and snacks to Pre-K students and families from Richfield Development Center and Oakboro Kids Club. This program is funded through the Strong Communities Fund and various grants from local organizations. It is the goal of this program to Reduce Childhood Hunger across Stanly County.
Darkness to Light
Partnering with the United Way of Stanly County, The Butterfly House, Stanly County Schools, Albemarle Police, and the Stanly County Health Department, the Y educates adults across our community on childhood sexual abuse prevention. This program is funded through the Strong Communities Fund and various grants from local organizations. It is the goal of this program to educate 2,000 adults and to Reduce Childhood Sexual Abuse in Stanly County.
LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA
Life changes drastically when you hear the words, "it's cancer". At that point, the road once taken is quickly altered and a new road ahead is unclear. Survivors struggle to create a new identity and way of life. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA provides support and guidance, free of charge, to cancer survivors as they build bridges and roads to a new destination of normalcy. This physican referred program provides each survivor and family member with a free 3 month membership as well as participation in a specialized class where one-on-one assistance is provided. This program is funded through the Strong Communities Fund and grants from Carolinas HealthCare System and Levine Cancer Institute. It is the goal of this program to Provide Support and Guidance to Cancer Survivors across Stanly County.
Open Doors Scholarship Program
When bad times arise and trouble sets in, it is easy to retreat. Through the Open Doors Scholarship Program, the Y provides assistance to individuals, families, and seniors who need a little extra help to participate in Y membership and/or programs. Funding for this program is provided through the Strong Communities Fund. Open Doors Scholarships for Afterschool and Summer Camp are also funded through the United Way of Stanly County and various grants from local organizations. The goal of this program is to Help Neighbors in Need.
Second Grade Learn to Swim Program
The Y proudly partners with the Stanly County Schools to provide the 2nd Grade Learn to Swim Program to 2nd graders across the county. Currently serving nine schools this year, the Y will teach over 450 students how to swim this school year! This program is brought to our community through the support of the Strong Communities Fund, Speedway Children's Charities, and the Smith William Snuggs Endowment. The goal of this program is to Reduce Childhood Drowning across Stanly County.
Sunday Lunch Program
In an effort to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate, the Y provides a warm meal to the hungry on Sunday mornings at the Community Table in Albemarle. On an average, we provide 90 meals a week through this outreach. A variety of volunteers serve food and love to those who may not know from where their next meal will come. Funding for this program is provided through the Strong Communities Fund, as well as support from Uwharrie Bank, Uwharrie Running Club, and various local organizations. The goal of this program is to Feed the Hungry on Sundays and Reduce Hunger in Stanly County.
